Creating Social Contagion through Viral Product Design: A Randomized Trial of Peer Influence in Networks

چکیده
W examine how firms can create word-of-mouth peer influence and social contagion by designing viral features into their products and marketing campaigns. To econometrically identify the effectiveness of different viral features in creating social contagion, we designed and conducted a randomized field experiment involving the 1.4 million friends of 9,687 experimental users on Facebook.com. We find that viral features generate econometrically identifiable peer influence and social contagion effects. More surprisingly, we find that passive-broadcast viral features generate a 246% increase in peer influence and social contagion, whereas adding active-personalized viral features generate only an additional 98% increase. Although active-personalized viral messages are more effective in encouraging adoption per message and are correlated with more user engagement and sustained product use, passive-broadcast messaging is used more often, generating more total peer adoption in the network. Our work provides a model for how randomized trials can identify peer influence in social networks.

We examine how firms can create word-of-mouth peer influence and social contagion by designing viral features into their products and marketing campaigns. Word-of-mouth (WOM) is generally considered to be more effective at promoting product contagion when it is personalized and active. Unfortunately, the relative effectiveness of different viral features has not been quantified, nor has their e...
متن کاملIdentifying Influential and Susceptible Individuals in Social Networks: Evidence from a Randomized Experiment
Perhaps the two most important and elusive questions at the heart of viral marketing today are when is peer-to-peer influence mobilized and who are the influentials that most effectively mobilize and propagate influence in networks and society? Answers to these questions are critical to the success of viral marketing campaigns and for understanding how behavioral contagions spread through socia...
متن کاملAnalyzing the Impact of Incentive Structure on the Diffusion of Mobile Social Games: A Randomized Field Experiment
The massive growth in online social networking has revitalized academic interest in the power of social contagion as a force for individual and collective action. Recent literature (Aral and Walker 2011a, Bapna and Umyarov 2015) has causally established that peer-effects are ‘atwork’ in the general population of users of online social networks. Having established the causal existence of peer ef...

Introduction Identifying peer to peer influence in social networks is a difficult and fundamental problem in numerous disciplines including network theory, marketing, epidemiology and diffusion research. It is widely believed that the cleanest way to examine the magnitude of peer effects and the social, structural and personal circumstances under which influence is more or less pronounced is to...

Demonstrating compelling causal evidence of the existence and strength of peer to peer influence has become the holy grail of the modern research in online social networks. In these networks, it has been consistently demonstrated that user characteristics and behavior tend to cluster both in space and in time. There are two well known rival mechanisms that compete to be the explanation for this...
